Do not support terrible publishers out for a cash grab. This is simply a ScummVM release, which would be fine if they used a version that eliminates bugs (the newer version of ScummVM plays this without the mouse jumping cursor issues). This clearly wasn't even tested, nor did they take the extra day to add in Steam cards and emotes, achievements, art, music, wallpaper, etc. Fans waited since Steam or GOG launched for this game to arrive on one of the two platforms and when it finally becomes exclusive to Steam, we get a simple emulator with nothing extra. The actual fix for this game is to update the emulator. At that point, you might as well just download the game for free yourself elsewhere. Junk and the publisher should give the rights to this game up, as they don't deserve it.. I love this game, so much. I've grown up loving it, I play it often and I recommend anyone to try it. When I saw it on steam I immediately had to grab it, so many years of enjoyment. I still get goosebumps hearing the Here Comes The Edsels from the NES version, heh. So many memories, thank you for bringing it back. :). I love this game, so much. I've grown up loving it, I play it often and I recommend anyone to try it. So many memories, thank you for bringing it back. :). Maniac Mansion is unlike almost any other adventure game (except for Zak McKracken). The reason is that the NPCs in the game are alive. They have their own goals (get food, get mail, check out suspicious events), they can catch you, you can die or lose important items. Actions have real consequences, and there's even choice and different endings. The trailer above is very adequate and demonstrates some of that. The reason this game is so alive is the scripter David Fox, the same designer who did Zak McKracken and was heavily involved in the recently released Thimbleweed Park. Even though he's not the official game designer, he's the one who loves to make NPCs have their own virtual theater with daily routines, reactions to your actions, etc. This is also the first game that introduced mouse based interface and cut-scenes (in 1988). Sadly, the later games of Ron Gilbert and LucasFilm Games ended up being way more static, lifeless and fake, with NPCs that don't move, and player actions that never punish you, but at least kept the exploration and meaningful puzzles we can find here. The modern port of Maniac Mansion is very good. It supports mouse, multiple saves, and different graphical versions of the game. Of course, it's the fan made ScummVM, but it's great nevertheless.. 1st ever game I refundedMissing musicWorse GraphicsMouse jumps all over screenWould've been better if they just ported the NES version. Not a native experience. SCUMMVM is excellent, but I expected more from a direct-from-the-company release. Disney's name is front and center on the publisher line. The mouse is really wonky if you have a high-dpi mouse. Even turning it down to its slowest speed still resulted in massive jumps, making the game unplayable due to timing puzzles. The audio is emulatred PC Speaker with modulated square-wave, so don't expect Amiga style music. Also, if your monitor is set up for 1:1, you're going to be playing this in a TINY rectangle. Because the ScummVM UI is supressed, you can't adjust that before launching. You have to launch the menu with F5, then return to launcher. Additionally, if you're into GPL, you'll note the lack of required GPL verbiage in the Disney EULA. It's way better to play this within Day of the Tentacle.. Broken game.I grew up with this game on NES and it was wonderful... This is not a functioning game- no audio after the intro and I found the only way I could make the cursor even remotely controllably was to hold down the right mouse button the whole game.... otherwise it went all over the screen making the switches hard to time and having to redo multiple times.I do not recommend this at all..... UPDATE: The high DPI mouse bug has been fixed. You now have more of a reason to buy this incredible game.Alright, listen up folks, before I review the actual game I’m going to take a minute to make a very clear note.If you are going to buy this game because you grew up with the NES port, don’t. This is the DOS and enhanced PC port that:-looks very different (and might I add, *cough* BETTER *cough*) from the NES version-lacks the music you love so much-is not 100% identical to the NES version (NES version had certain things cut because of Nintendo’s strict content policy back then)If you happen to want to play the NES version, your only hope is to download an emulator and ROM (oh no, piracy of a 30 year-old game!). If you want to play the PC version in a much more modern gamer-friendly state, get Maniac Mansion Deluxe from the Internet. It’s free and has enhanced graphics, lest your 4K HDR eyeballs can’t bear to look at this 16-color masterpiece.NOW WITH THAT OUT OF THE WAY... time for the actual review.I love Maniac Mansion. It’s one of my favorite games and despite it practically being a relic dug up from a tomb at this point it still holds up as one of the best adventure games out there. There are multiple characters to choose from, all with their own skills and useful abilities. The game world is very colorful (not literally) and there’s a lot of charm around every corner. There’s a whole lot of stuff going on all the time in this game and that’s what I love about it—and not to mention, it was one of the first truly nonlinear games out there. With a plot and characters based on B-movie horror archetypes, it somehow turns this stuff into gold with the addition of fun dialogue, creative environment, and well-executed humor. And it didn’t completely destroy the “horror” factor, either—accidentally running into any of the Edisons on your quest to save the dumb cheerleader is actually quite terrifying, even without any music.I’m not so sure how much more I can say about the game without totally spoiling the entire experience, but I do want to say that if you ever get stuck on any puzzles, don’t be afraid to google the solutions as this was a game made back when developers perceived gamers as psychic mind genies who opened envelopes with microwaves (hey, I just solved a puzzle for you!) also once again if you want the NES version get an emulator and a ROM and if you want to play a more modern version of the game, then get Deluxe. Complete with MIDI soundtrack! Also if you’ve played Maniac Mansion and liked it, make sure to check out Thimbleweed Park—it’s a very similar game released just last year by the exact same guys who designed MM.Oh, and one more quick note before I sign off...Don’t be a tuna head.. So I grew up with the NES port. This is a VSCUMM port and it doesn't seem to have the indiviual character soundtracks that I remember. You will need to hit F5 to save, quit, load, or adjust the game options. If you normally run with a high mouse dpi, you're really going to want to turn it down to play this game. Controls feel a little clunky to me, but I grew up playing this with an NES controller and I may not have turned my dpi down enough. I could be misrembering some of the puzzles, but there does seem to be some slight differences in the gameplay than the NES version I grew up withAlso, 100% verified, it is possible to have Syd put the hamster in the microwave and turn it on with this version. (I would never condone doing such a thing in reality). I suppose I am one of the lucky? few? that was able to do this with in my NES version back in the day, enough though the NES version censored quite a few other things.... Anyway, 8 year old me is thrilled to see this game again.
